Flexin' My Range: Writing Romance in All Its Different Scenarios | Erica Strawberry

While romance is my niche, one of my biggest goals as a writer is to show my range—to prove that I can write stories that cross genres, explore diverse characters, and take readers on unique journeys. My books are far more than love stories; they delve into fantasy, crime, violence, and even history, all while staying true to the steamy romance that I’m known for.
A Cast of Complex Protagonists
The beauty of my stories lies in my characters—each unique, flawed, and compelling in their own way:
  • Aryikah Squires (My Lover, The Hitman): A middle-aged, overweight, somewhat mousy woman whose mundane life is forever changed by a dangerous younger man. Aryikah’s journey is about embracing passion, risk, and empowerment.
  • Elexis (Jane's Come Up): A sexy, street-smart, 30-something hustler with a hard-working spirit. Her story is about resilience, survival, and rising above her circumstances with the help of love and ambition.
  • Clemintine (Clemintine’s Revenge): An outspoken Persian woman with clairvoyant abilities. Clemintine’s bold personality leads her from grief and vengeance to the possibility of redemption and love.
  • Harriet (Immortal Heart): A resilient and spiritual southern mulatto woman born in the 1800s. Harriet’s story spans decades, blending history, fantasy, and her role as a healer and mentor.
  • Moneray (Moneray’s Blues): The only male protagonist in my lineup. Once a drug kingpin and womanizer, Moneray is haunted by a curse placed on him by his ex-lover, Deborah—with help from none other than the infamous Clemintine. Humbled by fatherhood and aging, Moneray fights to overcome his past.
Romance, Crime, Fantasy, and History: Something for Everyone
Each of my stories offers a unique flavor while staying grounded in romance:
  • Fantasy Elements: Moneray's Blues, Immortal Heart, and Clemintine's Revenge weave in elements of the supernatural, curses, and mysticism. Whether it’s Harriet’s Cherokee shaman roots or Clemintine’s clairvoyance, these stories add a magical layer to love and struggle.
  • Crime and Violence: For readers who crave intensity, Moneray's Blues, Jane’s Come Up, and My Lover, The Hitman explore gritty worlds filled with crime, betrayal, and danger. From Moneray’s violent past to the steamy chaos of Aryikah and Dvone’s affair, these stories keep you on edge.
  • History and Nostalgia: My books are windows into the past. Immortal Heart begins in the Antebellum South, spanning decades of Harriet’s life. Clemintine’s Revenge brings readers to 1970s Brooklyn, while Moneray's Blues shifts between the 90s and the present, exploring Moneray’s youth and his haunting relationship with Deborah.
Steamy Romance, My Signature Touch
At the heart of it all is romance—intense, passionate, and unapologetically real. Whether it’s Aryikah finding empowerment in unexpected love, Elexis rising through life’s struggles, or Clemintine rediscovering her heart, my stories remind us that love is transformative and powerful.
So if you crave variety—a mix of history, fantasy, suspense, and deeply satisfying romance—there’s a story here for you. I’m just getting started, but my range is undeniable.
